The Ballerina of Perennials
The Flower
A favorite in cottagecore, English, and rock gardens, 'Amethyst in Snow' stands out for its contrasting white-and-royal purple color scheme.
Wispy petals surround the eye with a filigree bud forming a vase at the base.
It can be grown for cut flowers, and cutting encourages more blooms.
The Plant
Growing about 14 inches high, plants naturalize small patches of poor, dry soil over time. Flowers appear in late spring and early summer.
Lance-like leaves have a lightly velvet fuzz, giving them a gray-green cast. Full sun is best but light shade is OK.
The Garden
Hardiness is one of the stellar features of 'Amethyst in Snow'. A native of European mountain meadows and open woodlands, it can handle winters down to USDA zone 3.
The cultivar does very well in cooler northern climates where the summers mimic the high, dry, and rocky conditions of the mountains.
Its other great feature? Deer resistance.

Harlequin-etched buds are edged in fringe.

Forms a garden filigree when planted en masse.

On foot-tall stems, blooms stand over silvery lance-like leaves.
