Shiny, lobed, deep green foliage bears soft spines at the ends of the lobes. Stalks of white and purple flowers appear in June and July. It is said to be the inspiration for the leaves on the Corinthian columns. While not reliably hardy in Zone 6, it has been hardy for us in Pennsylvania for the last five years.
